FXST ("the app," "we," "our") is an iOS app and iMessage extension for recording, importing, and sending short sound reactions. This page explains what data the app collects, why, and how it's handled.
Used only when you tap Record to create a CHIP from your own voice. Recordings are saved to your device (and, if you choose to share one to Community, uploaded — see below). We don't access the microphone at any other time.
Used only when you choose to import a video from your library to turn into a CHIP. If you grant full access (optional — the app works with the standard picker's limited, permission-free access too), it's used solely to speed up importing videos stored in iCloud; we don't browse, index, or upload anything from your library beyond the specific video you pick.
Used on-device only, to suggest tags for a CHIP you've just recorded or imported (e.g. recognizing the word "laugh" and suggesting that tag). This processing happens entirely on your device — nothing is sent to Apple's or our servers for this feature.
Audio files, titles, tags, and any custom cover art you create are stored locally on your device (in a location shared with the FXST iMessage extension so both can read the same library). None of this leaves your device unless you explicitly share a CHIP — either by sending it in Messages (which uses Apple's Messages infrastructure, not ours) or by sharing it to Community.
If you choose to share a CHIP to Community, its audio, title, category, tags, and any custom cover art are uploaded to a public database (Apple's CloudKit) that any FXST user can browse, preview, and save. This is public by design — don't share anything you don't want other users to hear or see.
Community participation uses an anonymous per-device identifier, not your name, email, or Apple ID, unless you choose to claim an optional display name. Claiming a display name uses Sign in with Apple purely to prevent someone else from impersonating you with the same name — we don't receive or store your email or real name from this process.
We also record, per anonymous identity, which CHIPs you've saved from Community, in order to power the "Trending" ranking. This is not linked to any personally identifying information.
If you report a CHIP or block a creator, that action (and any notes you add to a report) is stored so we can review it and take action, such as removing content that violates our guidelines.
The app keeps a local, on-device log of technical events (e.g. a failed upload, a timed-out download) to help troubleshoot problems, viewable in Settings → Diagnostic Log. This log never leaves your device automatically — it's only shared if you explicitly tap the share button and send it somewhere yourself.
CHIPs you create stay on your device until you delete them. Content shared to Community stays visible until you delete it, a moderator removes it for violating our guidelines, or you request its removal by contacting us (below).
FXST is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If this policy changes in a material way, we'll update the "Last updated" date above.
